Air Spading

There are various reasons why we undertake air spading, such as establishing root locations for development purposes and helping trees to deal better with stress, disease and other issues. As consultancy specialists, we provide expert advice on your trees and work closely with you to determine the best management solutions for all species.

Arbor Cultural Ltd has an AIR-EX air spade alongside various nozzles, a hood and a protection screen to minimise disruption and damage to surrounding areas. Our staff wear all necessary PPE in compliance with health and safety regulations.

What is Air Spading?

Air spading is the process of breaking up and removing soil with a jet of air, at high pressure, to create holes or trenches. This process is much quicker than conventional methods, such as using mechanical diggers or hand digging. An added benefit is prevention of damage to roots and utilities.

A further benefit is that because air spade equipment improves the rooting environment and overall tree health, the process itself helps to reduce the need for tree surgery.

When To Air Spade

Soil Decompaction

Soil compaction has a negative effect on tree health because it prevents the flow of nutrients and water through the root system. Many factors can cause soil compaction, such as construction work and foot or vehicle traffic. Air spading is an effective way to decompact the soil around the base of the tree without damaging any of the living parts.

We can also include mulching, nutrient application or soil conditioning at the same time. These processes further improve and maintain the good condition of trees.

Root Investigation

Arbor Cultural Ltd also provides air spading services as an investigative measure to find out exactly where the main roots of a tree are. This is often necessary for development projects or foundation designs, usually when the work will come close to the root protection area.

While we can always provide this service to address planning conditions, we strongly recommend undertaking it as part of the standard planning application process.

Tree Management

As tree consultancy experts, we often incorporate air spading into our comprehensive tree management strategies. The process is considerably beneficial for trees which we have identified as stressed or suffering from decay or degradation (something we assess with practices such as decay detection testing).

We are passionate about promoting a good understanding and appreciation of trees across the South of England and help our customers to manage them in a sustainable, environmentally conscious manner. We achieve this by offering expert advice and key services in Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire and Southeast England.
