BS5837 Arboricultural Site Supervision and Method Statement Compliance

Arboricultural Supervision and Clerk of Works

Simply explained, Arbor Cultural will be present on site to supervise and oversee the works. This means that we can ensure the construction team follows approved methodologies for your development project. In other words, it is an assurance that everything is progressing as it should and that it complies fully with BS5837 conditions. Ultimately, the goal is to deliver an excellent result with as little accidental damage as possible to the trees on or near the site. You may have heard of this as Clerk of Works, or (ArbCoW).

This service often supports a BS5837 Tree Report or Method Statement. It is fair to say that local authority Tree Officers are increasingly insisting on meticulous checks and balances like these. For example, if there are possible conflicts between the trees and the proposed development, a method statement will be needed – and as a result, a supervision programme and supervision reports are likely to be required by your Planning Authority.

Auditable Table of Site Supervision

Your LPA will require an auditable table of site supervision to understand the key stages of implementation. Therefore, Arbor Cultural’s approach is structured and methodical – with site visits to inspect the works at selected times. Generally, we will combine periodical inspections with supervising specific types of activity to ensure full compliance with the approved planning documents.

Inspecting Tree Protection Measures

A primary focus of our supervision is inspecting how they are protecting the tree, or trees. We analyze ground protection measures prior to starting any site activity and confirm site signage is highly visible. This includes inspecting temporary Heras fencing to ensure that it is in the correct location, correctly fitted, and fit for purpose according to the Tree Protection Plan.

Monitoring RPA Interventions

We oversee protection measures during excavation, before pile installation and during any work within the root protection area of retained trees. This involves supervising any works within the root protection areas, including pile excavation and installation, hand digging, and no dig construction (Geocell) installation. We prevent soil compaction and root severance in real-time.

Condition Discharge and Liaison

We document each visit and create a final report to be signed off at the end of the project. The aim is to assess the site works’ impact on the tree, its roots, and the surrounding soil and implement necessary measures to correct the situation. We will be happy to liaise with your local Tree Officer where necessary, acting as your link between the planning authority and your contractor.

The Arboricultural Supervision Process

Our structured programme ensures your project meets the highest standards of the BS5837 framework. Key activities include:

  • Analysing ground protection measures prior to machinery arriving on site.
  • Confirming site facility and material storage locations are outside of RPAs.
  • Inspecting site fencing and ensuring it remains fit for purpose throughout the build.
  • Overseeing specialist construction techniques within the root protection areas.
  • Producing final reports to enable remaining tree conditions to be discharged.

By integrating supervision with our other technical services, such as Impact Assessments or Decay Detection, we provide a 360-degree compliance umbrella. We work to secure tree health and safety within the built environment, ensuring your project achieves its goals without the risk of enforcement action or legal delays.
